Mass Attacks in Public Spaces
Mass attacks in public spaces are not uncommon in the United States. There has been a steady increase of mass shootings and other attacks across the country. These types of attacks can be well thought out or random. Individuals may use a firearm, a vehicle, homemade bombs, and other methods to cause mass casualties.
In the event of a mass attack, it is important to be prepared to protect yourself and help others.
While the threat of mass attacks is real, we can all take steps to prepare, protect ourselves, and help others before, during, and after the attack.
Prepare BEFORE.
Before an event happens, there are some things that can be done to help prepare yourself in the event of a mass attack.
- Stay alert. Always be aware of your environment and any possible dangers.
- If you notice something suspicious, inform the authorities. That includes suspicious packages, and people behaving strangely. Learn more about crime prevention programs such as your local Neighborhood Watch.
- Observe warning signs in people you know. Signs might include unusual or violent communications, substance abuse, changes in behavior, or expressed anger or intent to harm toward a specific person or group. These warning signs may increase over time.
- Have an exit plan. Identify exits and areas to hide wherever you go, including work, school, and special events.
- Learn lifesaving skills. Take first aid and other emergency training to assist with the wounded until help arrives.
